Ontario regulators hit Score Media Gaming with a penalty of two hundred thousand dollars after an investigation into player protection standards. The maximum available fine came down following a high stakes parlay wager that went wrong for a customer. The wagering requirement was not stated in the details provided by the regulator.
A million dollar ticket
A bettor placed a one thousand dollar parlay covering National Hockey League, National Basketball Association, and National Collegiate Athletic Association events. The ticket carried a potential payout exceeding one million dollars if all legs succeeded. As the matches unfolded, every single leg won except for the final one.
Failed cash out attempts
With one leg remaining, the operator presented a cash out offer worth three hundred eighty thousand dollars to the customer. The bettor accepted the offer immediately, but verification issues prevented the transaction from happening. Four minutes later, a second cash out offer of approximately one hundred thousand dollars appeared on the screen. The customer accepted that offer as well, but it also failed to process.
Regulatory action and warning
The final leg of the parlay lost, leaving the bettor with zero winnings from the massive ticket. Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario officials determined that neither of the two cash out offers were legitimate. The regulator stated that operators must ensure all gaming opportunities presented to customers are accurate and fully honoured.
Bettors should remember that cash out offers can sometimes fail due to technical and verification problems.
