PointsBet agrees to two day Ontario shutdown over Porter betting scandal

PointsBet Canada settled with regulators for a short shutdown over suspicious Jontay Porter prop bets.

Written by the BettingEdgeHub desk, 21 October 2026

PointsBet Canada reached a settlement with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. The operator agreed to a two day suspension of its gaming operations in the province. This penalty stems from the handling of suspicious betting activity tied to the Jontay Porter scandal.

The Porter betting scandal

Jontay Porter was banned for life by the National Basketball Association after admitting to a wire fraud conspiracy. He deliberately exited games early so gamblers could cash in on prop bets involving his statistics. Regulators found that sportsbooks failed to properly monitor and report this unusual activity.

Reporting errors and settlement

The regulator stated that PointsBet initially provided inaccurate information regarding markets offered on Porter. The operator blamed the mistake on human error during an internal transition. Instead of facing a longer appeal process, the company accepted the reduced two day shutdown.

Independent audit required

As part of the settlement terms, PointsBet must complete an independent audit. The auditor and methodology require approval from the gaming commission. The company also needs to implement corrective measures to fix any identified security or reporting deficiencies.

What it means for a bet

Regulators are cracking down hard on sportsbooks that fail to properly monitor and report suspicious betting activity.
