PointsBet agreed to a two day suspension of its Ontario gaming site after reaching a settlement with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission. Regulators originally pushed for a five day penalty. The dispute centered on wagers placed on basketball player Jontay Porter.
Regulatory findings
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission claimed that a PointsBet subsidiary failed in properly monitoring and reporting suspicious gambling actions. The regulator pointed to bets involving Porter, who received a lifetime ban from the National Basketball Association for gambling violations.
Settlement terms
As part of the resolution, PointsBet agreed to hire an independent auditor approved by the regulator. The company must address any findings from the audit and complete a full remediation process.
Company reaction
PointsBet Canada chief executive officer Scott Vanderwel stated that the company was disappointed by the initial proposed sanction from the regulator. The wagering requirement was not stated in the regulatory settlement details.
Bettors should expect stricter monitoring of player markets as regulators crack down on suspicious wagering activity.
