Saquon Barkley recently confirmed that he had to sell his investment in Polymarket. The running back received direct instructions from the National Football League to unload the stake before the season started. Major sports leagues are taking very different stances on these alternative financial platforms.
Nba embraces prediction markets
While football bosses push back against event contracts, basketball leaders are moving in the opposite direction. The National Basketball Association signed a major agreement with federal regulators and named Polymarket and Kalshi as preferred partners. LeBron James also signed a partnership deal with Polymarket after his contract with DraftKings expired.
Legal trouble for Kalshi
Kalshi is facing severe legal pressure from state authorities across the country. The Utah attorney general filed criminal charges against two top executives after an undercover agent placed sports trades on the platform. Prosecutors claim the operation violates local laws against online gambling and creates a public nuisance.
Massive funding round secured
Despite ongoing legal battles in multiple states, Kalshi recently completed a massive funding round. Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management backed the company, pushing its valuation to forty billion dollars. The platform continues to grow rapidly even as state regulators try to shut down sports trading.
Security breach on Polymarket
Polymarket experienced a brief security scare when hackers drained funds from hundreds of accounts on the offshore exchange. Tracking firms noted that the breach lasted for about an hour before trading was halted. Company representatives promised that every user affected by the security flaw will receive full reimbursement.
Expect stricter rules from sports leagues regarding alternative betting and financial prediction markets.
