MGM Resorts international online gaming division moved close to break even during the third quarter. The digital segment posted revenue of 184 million dollars, which is an increase from 174 million dollars the previous year. Adjusted losses narrowed to 4 million dollars compared to a loss of 23 million dollars a year earlier. Management pointed to growth in Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom as the main drivers behind the positive movement.
Growth slows across key markets
Revenue growth for the online arm slowed sharply compared to the previous quarter. The BetMGM brand lifted business to consumer revenue by 8 percent across those core territories. In August, MGM launched online sports betting in the United Kingdom using its own proprietary platform. That specific system currently generates more than 80 percent of the company online sports revenue in the region.
Land based operations face pressure
While the digital division improved, traditional land based operations experienced weaker pricing. Revenue fell 8 percent at regional operations and dropped 2 percent at Las Vegas strip resorts. Macau provided a bright spot with record revenue of 1.1 billion dollars, representing a 5 percent rise. However, higher expenses impacted overall segment earnings for the wider resort group.
BetMGM joint venture updates
The North American BetMGM joint venture reported third quarter net revenue of 710 million dollars, marking a 7 percent increase. The partnership generated 34 million dollars in payments to MGM during the period. The joint venture expects to finish the year near the bottom of its established guidance ranges. Operators in the United Kingdom also face future tax increases, with a new 25 percent remote betting rate scheduled for April 2027.
Punters should watch how upcoming tax changes and new proprietary technology platforms impact pricing and market competitiveness for major online bookmakers.
