Polymarket is raising a new one billion dollar funding round that will value the company at twenty one billion dollars. The investment is led by 1789 Capital, a firm that includes Donald Trump Jr among its partners. This fresh capital pushes Polymarket close to its main rival Kalshi, which holds a twenty two billion dollar valuation.
Rising trading volumes
Investor interest is surging because trading activity on these platforms has grown significantly. Monthly trading volume across the sector climbed from one billion two hundred million dollars in early twenty twenty five to more than twenty billion dollars by January twenty six. Sports wagering remains a major driver of this activity, accounting for a large share of volume on both major platforms.
Legal battles continue
Despite the financial success, prediction markets face ongoing legal challenges across the United States. Courts are divided on whether these event contracts are federally regulated derivatives or simply unlicensed sports betting. The Ninth Circuit recently ruled that sports contracts in Nevada are likely sports bets, while the Third Circuit sided with Kalshi in New Jersey.
What this means for bettors
State regulators in places like New York, Connecticut, Utah and Michigan are actively trying to block these markets. If you live in a state where regulators successfully ban these products, you may lose access to placing wagers on these platforms entirely while the Supreme Court sorts out the legal confusion.
State legal battles mean your local access to prediction markets could change suddenly.
