The Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling wants major changes in how local regulators hand out fines to betting operators. Industry leaders argue that the Swedish Gambling Inspectorate should copy the methods used by financial and education watchdogs. Gustaf Hoffstedt believes that licensed betting companies would benefit if supervisors used more balanced working methods.
Call for fairer fines
The trade group highlighted issues with the current penalty system used against operators who make mistakes. Financial regulators usually set penalty fees at much lower percentages of available ranges compared to the gambling authority. Critics say this adjustment makes punishment fit the crime and matches turnover much better than current practices.
System wide checks
Another major complaint focuses on how officials handle anti money laundering rules during audits. Authorities currently rely on tiny samples of customer files to punish brands instead of looking at complete compliance frameworks. Operators want supervisors to review overarching risk assessments and internal governance rather than small individual errors.
Ongoing industry friction
Disagreements between operators and the Swedish regulator happen frequently regarding the state of the local market. Channelisation rates remain a major concern, especially for online casino products that struggle to keep players on regulated sites. Sports betting performs much better with high participation, but strict rules continue to push customers toward unlicensed alternatives.
Softer fines and smarter rules could keep more betting brands in the regulated market.
