Spanish regulators are taking strong action against fraud after complaints rose significantly. Officials introduced new rules to stop criminals from using stolen details to set up betting accounts. The Directorate General for Gambling Regulation is pushing for much stricter checks across the entire sector.
New payment rules for bettors
Under the updated regulations, bookmakers must ensure that the person opening an account is the true owner of the payment method. New accounts need instant verification right from the start. Existing customers have a short period to prove their payment ownership or face account closure.
Players can still deposit funds and place bets during the transition period, but withdrawals are blocked until verification is complete. Accounts that fail the checks after six months will be shut down permanently. Remaining balances must be returned to the rightful owners, following strict anti money laundering laws.
Wider changes in Spain
The regulatory body is pushing ahead with updates despite political uncertainty in the country. A central deposit system is scheduled for launch next year to increase player safety. Licensed operators face challenges with player retention while adapting to these tighter security measures.
Criminal groups have increasingly targeted the sector by using payment methods that are difficult to verify quickly. The new policies aim to close these loopholes and protect consumers. Regulators remain focused on cutting down illegal activity despite upcoming political changes.
Bettors in Spain must verify that their payment methods match their account details to avoid withdrawal blocks and account closures.
