Researchers at Rutgers University have released findings from a major national study on youth gambling habits. The team surveyed nearly seventeen hundred people aged thirteen to twenty seven to see how often minors place bets. The results show that nearly forty three percent of teenagers aged thirteen to seventeen have gambled in the past year.
Modern technology drives youth participation
The survey covered sports betting, casino games, lottery tickets, cryptocurrency trading, and social casino platforms. Lead researcher Lia Nower pointed out that modern mobile technology puts a sportsbook in every pocket. Young people now have easy access to betting products right from their phones instead of needing to visit physical venues.
High risk levels among young bettors
More than half of all surveyed participants reported some form of gambling activity over the past year. Among those who actually risked money, nearly forty percent displayed signs of problem gambling. Furthermore, over ten percent met the criteria for high risk problem gambling.
Family exposure and income factors
The research linked household gambling exposure to higher play rates among adolescents and young adults. Teens who perceived a gambling problem in their home were much more likely to become high risk problem gamblers. The data also showed that lower household income groups experienced the highest rates of severe gambling issues.
A warning for the betting industry
Experts stress that early exposure creates a cumulative effect where starting young increases later risks. This study serves as a major warning for parents, educators, and lawmakers as betting becomes more embedded in daily life.
The rise in underage betting highlights the urgent need for stricter age verification and responsible gambling safeguards across all sportsbooks.
