Polymarket faced a major security breach when hackers drained an estimated $2.7 million from hundreds of accounts. The platform suspended trading for about an hour while investigating the issue. Normal operations have since resumed for users.
Third party software targeted
Security researchers discovered that the attackers compromised software supplied by a third party provider called DebugBear. The malicious code tampered with JavaScript embedded in the website. This allowed the attackers to target active user sessions without requiring passwords or phishing links.
The malicious script checked cryptocurrency balances and open prediction market positions. It then sold holdings and transferred assets to wallets controlled by the attackers. Blockchain analytics estimated that about seven hundred users suffered losses on the international platform.
Reimbursements and past incidents
Polymarket promised to make affected customers whole after fixing the security flaw. Users who lost smaller amounts received refunds quickly. Those with larger losses must sign release agreements before getting their funds back
This incident marks the second major security breach for the platform. A previous third party breach resulted in a similar theft of funds from users earlier in the year. The company referred the latest case to law enforcement in the United Kingdom.
Always keep your funds secure and monitor your accounts closely when using prediction market platforms.
