Las Vegas Strip casinos posted higher gaming revenue in September despite flat tourism numbers. Gross gaming revenue reached $693.5 million, which is a small increase of 0.8 percent compared to the previous year. Slot machines drove the growth while table games and sports betting saw lower totals. Casino operators hope that recent gaming trends will continue through the final months of the year.
Slot machines drive revenue
Slot machines on the Strip posted a higher hold rate of 8.23 percent compared to 8.04 percent last year. Slot gross gaming revenue reached $452.6 million for the month. Revenue from table games and sports betting dropped by 3 percent to total $240.9 million. Blackjack and craps both saw noticeable declines in player winnings.
Baccarat and roulette stand out
Baccarat proved to be an exception as revenue jumped 12 percent to reach $58.6 million. Roulette revenue also surged by 20 percent to total $33.6 million. Analysts noted that the calendar shift for the Labor Day holiday provided a useful weekend boost. Statewide gross gaming revenue remained flat at $1.28 billion.
Tourism and hotel pricing
Overall visitor volume remained flat with nearly 3.1 million people traveling to the destination. Strip resort hotels lowered room prices by almost 11 percent to attract leisure travelers. Hotel occupancy dropped to 78.1 percent with weekend occupancy reaching 89.8 percent. Casinos are looking toward a busy October with several major conventions and a Saturday Halloween.
Casino visitors should expect tighter slot machine odds as properties look to protect their profit margins.
