Former politician Katie Wallis admitted to altering a digital passport image in order to bypass a self exclusion scheme and access an online betting site. Cardiff Crown Court heard that the former MP used her own computer to change a date on the image during April two thousand and twenty two. She pleaded guilty to an offence under the Computer Misuse Act and received a nine month conditional discharge.

The self exclusion bypass

Prosecutor Richard Posner told the court that Wallis had a recognised gambling problem and had previously signed up for Gamstop, which blocks customers from UK licensed betting websites. She used the altered document to deposit money on a gambling site after the restriction was bypassed. The court noted that the funds were lost, but no other person suffered a financial loss during the incident.

Personal circumstances and mitigation

The defense stated that Wallis was experiencing a serious mental disorder following a period of intense personal turmoil. This included family separation and coming out as transgender while serving in parliament. The judge described the offence as a single impulsive act committed during psychological distress and accepted her compelling personal mitigation.

Wider political betting scandals

This case adds to a growing list of politicians facing legal trouble related to betting offences. Just weeks prior, three people linked to the Conservative Party received suspended sentences over an election betting scandal. Wallis has since re applied to be blocked from gambling sites and stated that her gambling problem is no longer a feature of her life.

What it means for a bet

Self exclusion tools are meant to protect vulnerable players, but desperate gamblers still find ways around digital blocks.
