Three individuals connected to the Conservative Party before the election have been sentenced for breaching betting rules. Anthony Lee, Laura Lee and Amy Hind placed wagers after finding out the exact date of the vote. The Gambling Commission brought the case to protect the integrity of betting markets.
Inside information brings criminal convictions
Anthony Lee placed over sixty bets totaling over one thousand pounds and stood to win fifteen thousand pounds. His wife Laura wagered smaller amounts across eight bets for a potential five thousand pound profit. Amy Hind placed or attempted seven bets worth over two thousand pounds with a potential return of twenty six thousand pounds.
Court sentences and financial penalties
Anthony Lee received a prison sentence of ten months and two weeks suspended for twelve months, plus one hundred hours of unpaid work. Laura Lee received a suspended sentence of four months and two weeks with forty hours of unpaid work. Amy Hind received a six month suspended sentence with fifty hours of unpaid work, and Anthony and Laura Lee must each pay one thousand pounds in prosecution costs.
More trials scheduled for future dates
This is the first time the Gambling Commission has secured convictions for this type of offence. Other figures connected to the Conservative Party have been charged and face trials scheduled for later years. The regulatory body stated it will continue investigating suspected criminal activity to protect fair betting markets.
Punters should remember that using confidential information to gain an unfair advantage on betting markets is illegal and carries severe criminal penalties.
