The sports betting boom faces new scrutiny after a bettor threatened a manager over a tactical decision during a major baseball series. Blake Morgan of Ohio allegedly launched into a furious fourteen minute rant at league officials because he lost money on a wager. His anger stemmed from a manager pitching to a star batter instead of walking him.
A costly wager
The bettor accused the team manager of match fixing and trying to ruin people who placed wagers on the game. He claimed the manager wanted to help gamblers profit and shouted about rigged outcomes. There was zero proof of any wrongdoing by the team or the manager.
Threats on live television
Things escalated quickly when the caller threatened physical violence during the broadcast. He stated he might travel to a game and attack the manager in front of millions of viewers. Investigators quickly traced the phone call back to his residence in Ohio.
State regulators step in
Baseball security officials banned the individual from all stadiums indefinitely following the incident. State gambling regulators placed him on an involuntary exclusion list to shut him out from legal betting markets. League security noted a sharp rise in threats against sports figures since betting became legal across the country.
Rising abuse in sports
Placing wagers should always remain fun, and crossing the line into threats brings permanent bans and legal trouble.
