Italian prosecutors are investigating five individuals, including a well known singer and disc jockey, for allegedly extorting money from professional footballer Nicolò Fagioli. The player previously served a seven month ban for betting on matches during his time with Juventus. Investigators suspect the suspects forced the midfielder to hand over forty thousand euros by threatening to expose his illegal gambling activities.
Threats over betting evidence
The musician, known by his stage name Ludwig, allegedly claimed he held screenshots showing Fagioli betting on specific match events like throw ins. Police executed a search warrant and seized electronic devices to examine communications between the musician and the player. Investigators are trying to determine if these messages were used to demand cash in exchange for keeping the information private.
A history of massive debts
Fagioli previously admitted to accumulating millions in debts through illegal gambling networks before his ban began in two thousand twenty three. During earlier legal proceedings, the player described receiving violent threats from creditors regarding his unpaid balances. Other high profile Italian players were also caught up in the initial police investigation into unlawful online betting sites.
Extortion and money laundering claims
The wider criminal investigation involves several other people facing allegations ranging from unauthorized betting organization to aggravated extortion. One businessman is also under investigation for suspected self laundering after authorities claimed the extorted funds were reinvested through commercial transactions. Legal representatives for some of the accused individuals have denied the allegations, and no official findings of guilt have been established yet.
This case highlights the ongoing risks surrounding illegal betting networks and player involvement in prohibited markets.
