Yokohama faces a special mayoral election scheduled for October the eighteenth after the previous mayor resigned. The sudden vote will cost the city over one billion five hundred million yen. Multiple candidates have entered the race to lead the second largest city in Japan.
Casino opposition
Former House of Representatives member Kazuma Nakatani officially launched his campaign with a strong stance against gambling. He wants to introduce a permanent ordinance that bans casino projects completely. Nakatani argues that large integrated resorts do not fit his vision for the community.
Other candidates are also addressing the situation in different ways. Atsumi Harasawa has stated that she considers the entire resort debate closed. Atsushi Fukuyama prefers to focus on general administrative reforms rather than discussing gambling venues.
National context
Japan anticipates a second bidding round for integrated resorts next year as part of tourism promotion goals. Osaka remains the only major participant so far with official backing. Other regions show very limited interest in hosting massive gaming complexes at this time.
The political resistance in Yokohama removes any immediate chance of a major new gambling market opening in the city.
