Stake has restricted access for users in Ireland following consultations with the Gambling Regulatory Authority for Ireland. Visitors to the site in the country now see a message stating that the platform is unavailable due to local licensing restrictions.
Regulatory pressure grows
The new Irish regulator took over control of the gambling sector from the revenue commissioners. The authority is focusing heavily on player protection and market integrity. Officials confirmed that several operators have voluntarily blocked their services to local users.
The regulator is working with these platforms to ensure that all customer deposits are promptly refunded. Other betting companies have also chosen to close their wagering activities in Ireland after talking with the authority.
Troubles in other regions
This restriction follows regulatory action in Nigeria where authorities banned the platform across multiple states. Regulators in that country issued several prior warnings before declaring the operations illegal.
Meanwhile, the brand maintains its presence in the English Premier League through a sponsorship deal with Everton. This agreement recently moved to the shirt sleeves due to upcoming league rules regarding front of shirt betting sponsors.
Efforts to improve standing
Rival operators have previously questioned the presence of unlicensed brands sponsoring English football clubs. Despite these criticisms, the platform utilizes strict geo fencing technology to block unauthorized jurisdictions.
The company has recently secured legal licenses in regulated markets such as Denmark, Argentina, and Mexico. These moves suggest an attempt to improve its standing with official gambling regulators around the world.
Punters in restricted regions should use fully licensed local bookmakers to protect their deposits.
