Spalletti left fuming after late Juventus winner chalked off by video review

Juventus dropped points in Europe after a controversial late offside call ruined their betting backers.

Punters who backed Juventus to secure a late victory in the Europa League suffered a frustrating blow on Thursday night. Luciano Spalletti saw his side held to a two all draw by Rennes at the Allianz Stadium. The result halted their perfect start in the competition and shifted their outright market odds.

Early goals set frantic pace

Zeki Celik opened the scoring for the Italian giants inside five minutes. Rennes responded quickly through Mousa Al Tamari before Boulaye Dia put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot before half time. Nick Woltemade equalised with his own spot kick to level the score once again.

Late drama denies dramatic winner

With time running out, Jhon Lucumi thought he had grabbed all three points for the hosts with a deflected shot. However, a lengthy video review intervened to rule the effort out for offside. Pundits and bettors alike debated the decision long after the final whistle.

Market impact for outright backers

The dropped points might lengthen Juventus odds in the outright winner markets for this European competition. Bettors assessing their futures slips will note that Spalletti is still searching for the right combination from his forward line. Consistency will be key if the team wants to shorten those prices moving forward.

What it means for a bet

Backers should expect bookmakers to drift Juventus slightly in the outright tournament odds following this stumble.
