Trenton police officers recently completed an eleven month investigation into an unauthorized gambling network operating across the city. Working alongside state financial crimes units, authorities executed several search warrants on October fifth. Police seized more than seventy illegal slot machines from at least thirty local businesses and homes.
Suspect arrested in Philadelphia
Law enforcement officers arrested Harry Almonte at his Philadelphia residence during the operation. Investigators identified the thirty three year old man as the ringleader of the illegal gambling scheme. Officers found three semi automatic handguns and over a half pound of non medicinal marijuana in his possession during the arrest.
Almonte now faces multiple serious charges including promoting gambling, maintaining a gambling resort, and money laundering. He could face additional weapons and drug charges in Pennsylvania. Prosecutors recovered more than one hundred thousand dollars in cash from the unregulated gaming machines taken during the raids.
Penalties for host locations
Business owners who allowed the illegal slot machines on their properties received complaint summonses for maintaining gambling houses. These individuals face possible fines of up to fifty thousand dollars for hosting the unauthorized devices. Detectives confirmed that these machines were used for personal financial gain inside local establishments.
New Jersey laws strictly limit slot machines to the nine physical casinos located in Atlantic City. State regulators also oversee twenty nine licensed online gambling platforms for legal digital players. Local authorities stated that illegal gambling operations will not be tolerated anywhere in Trenton.
Always use licensed and regulated operators for your wagers to avoid shady underground schemes.
