Las Vegas casinos on the main strip generated gross gaming revenue of 684 million dollars in August. This total represented a tiny increase of zero point seven percent compared to the previous year. Major table games and sports wagering suffered significant drops during the month.
Heavy losses for sports betting
Sports betting revenue fell thirty two percent compared to the previous year. Blackjack dropped twenty percent and roulette fell nearly forty percent. Penny slots also dragged down overall earnings with a decline of over twenty percent across the properties.
Baccarat saves the month
High rollers and baccarat players rescued casino earnings from a much worse fate. Baccarat revenue surged thirty four percent to reach 155 million dollars. Tables enjoyed an unusually high hold rate of eighteen point five percent during the month.
Tourism and travel decline
Visitor volume fell four point three percent to just over three million travelers. Airport passenger traffic dropped nine percent from the previous year. Hotel occupancy also slid as operators attempted to attract visitors by lowering nightly room rates.
Softer tourism numbers and poor sports betting revenue show that Vegas operators are relying heavily on high roller baccarat to maintain house profits.
