A well known Las Vegas gambler is back in legal trouble following a grand jury indictment. Prosecutors claim William Roberts continued running an unauthorized sportsbook even after authorities took him into custody. The new charges include operating a gaming establishment without a license and attempted money laundering.
The undercover bets
Court proceedings revealed that Roberts allegedly took more than sixty nine thousand dollars in wagers after his first arrest in April. Prosecutors stated that he even accepted bets from the undercover agent who was actively investigating him. Investigators also claim he used his fitness center and consulting businesses to hide the funds.
Disputed allegations
Roberts denies all accusations of illegal bookmaking and maintains he is simply a sports bettor. His defense attorney argued that his client does not own the Costa Rican website used in the operation. Furthermore, the defense claims federal agents already verified this fact during a long investigation.
Court restrictions
Prosecutors asked for a one million dollar bail during the recent court appearance. The judge instead released Roberts on his own recognizance with strict electronic monitoring. He must also surrender his passport and stay away from local casinos while awaiting trial.
This case highlights the ongoing legal risks surrounding unlicenced betting operations and the methods investigators use.
