Major League Baseball indexes open door for new financial markets

FutureSports partnered with Major League Baseball to create team performance indexes and futures contracts.

Written by the BettingEdgeHub desk, 21 September 2026

Major League Baseball signed an agreement with FutureSports to launch performance indexes for all thirty franchises. The company will use official league data to build the new benchmarks. Financial terms of the agreement remain private.

New CME group futures

CME Group plans to offer cash settled futures contracts based on the baseball benchmarks. These weekly, monthly and quarterly contracts await regulatory review before trading begins. Launch dates for the new baseball products are not yet public.

Exchange traded funds follow

Fund issuers quickly filed plans for exchange traded funds tied to the new baseball indexes. LeagueShares and RexShares submitted filings to hold baskets of the exchange traded derivatives. Some issuers even requested approval for leveraged futures funds.

Alternative to traditional betting

These financial products sit somewhere between standard sports bets and prediction markets. Sophisticated traders might use them to hedge large positions across a long season. Regulators have not yet approved the similar hockey funds proposed earlier.

What it means for a bet

These new financial derivatives give sharp bettors fresh ways to hedge team exposure during the season.
