Laos chases millions from American casino operators after long legal battle

A federal appeals court revived a multi million dollar dispute involving American investors and a Laos casino.

The government of Laos is still trying to collect more than five million dollars from the American businessmen behind a troubled casino project. This legal fight started over a decade ago when a successful border casino partnership turned sour. The recent court ruling gives the government another chance to pursue the cash.

Partnership turns sour

American entrepreneurs arrived in the country with plans to build multiple gambling resorts to attract cross border customers. They opened a major casino near a busy river bridge which quickly became a huge financial success. Within a few years relationships broke down completely and accusations of government interference filled the air.

Arbitrators ruled against the corporate entities and ordered them to pay millions of dollars toward legal costs. Laos says it is still trying to collect those funds seven years later after settlement agreements collapsed. The government turned its attention toward the individual businessmen who controlled the firms.

Court revives the dispute

A federal judge previously rejected the attempt to target the individual investors because they were not named in the original arbitration. The appeals court reversed that decision and ordered the lower court to hear the arguments again. This sends the sprawling casino dispute back into the legal system for another round.

What it means for a bet

This long running corporate dispute shows how messy international gambling investments can become.
