Philip Pietras appeared in Rockville Superior Court to face a plea deal that brings serious prison time. The former Connecticut funeral home director was accused of stealing money from clients. He used the cash to pay for expensive gambling trips and personal luxuries.
How the scheme was uncovered
An employee at a related company noticed large withdrawals from accounts belonging to customers who were still alive. Checks were not deposited properly, which raised more red flags. Pietras blamed accounting errors and pandemic disruptions when questioned about the missing money.
Millions lost at the tables
Investigators discovered that Pietras and his wife lost over one million dollars at Mohegan Sun over a fourteen year period. Other venues reported losses exceeding eight million dollars across the same timeframe. The stolen money also paid for cruises, hotel stays, and plane tickets.
Facing a lengthy prison sentence
Nearly a hundred individuals, many over the age of 60, were affected by the theft. Pietras agreed to a plea deal that includes fifteen years in prison, with the sentence suspended after seven and a half years. He will also face five years of probation with sentencing scheduled for January 22.
This case highlights the devastating personal and legal consequences of severe gambling addiction.
