football and tennis drive growth
Football generated six point three two billion euros in stakes, making up more than half of the total market volume. The expanded Champions League format contributed heavily to the numbers by adding extra matches to the calendar. Tennis also performed strongly with a sixteen percent increase in stakes, reaching two point six five billion euros.
problem gamblers target lower leagues
Data published by the French regulator shows that excessive players accounted for more than eighty percent of all stakes placed on Brazilian, Saudi, Japanese, and Australian football leagues. The same group of bettors drove eighty to eighty nine percent of the money wagered on single periods of play. Average yearly stakes per bettor rose to three thousand one hundred fifty nine euros.
Match turnover remained high for marquee fixtures involving Paris Saint Germain. The Champions League final against Inter Milan brought in thirty eight point two million euros in bets. Another twenty six point seven million euros was wagered on the Club World Cup final featuring Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain.
Punters should note that heavy betting volume on niche leagues often comes from a small group of excessive players.
