Federal prosecutors have narrowed their investigation into former Cleveland pitcher Emmanuel Clase down to eighteen specific pitches. Investigators claim these throws were tied to a fraudulent betting scheme that targeted micro markets on baseball games.
The suspicious pitches and bets
The suspect deliveries took place across seventeen games between May 2023 and May 2025. Prosecutors state that bettors wagered heavily on pitch velocity, pitch type, and whether the outcome would be a ball or a strike. Investigators believe Clase communicated inside information to collaborators, occasionally throwing balls into the dirt to guarantee the desired outcome.
Fraudulent profits and co conspirators
The insider information allegedly helped bettors secure more than four hundred thousand dollars in fraudulent payouts. Former player Luis Ortiz is also implicated in the case, with prosecutors pointing to two suspicious pitches that yielded sixty thousand dollars in winning bets. Both individuals were indicted in November 2025.
Facing trial and prison time
The charges against the former players include wire fraud conspiracy, sports bribery, and money laundering. Both defendants pleaded not guilty, and a trial is scheduled for November. Convictions on all counts could carry a maximum prison sentence of sixty five years.
Bettors should expect sportsbooks to maintain strict scrutiny over micro markets and prop bets involving pitch outcomes.
