Brazilian financial officials are investigating roughly forty online gambling accounts holding unusually large sums of money. The review began as authorities started returning billions of reals to millions of regular bettors following a sudden prohibition on sports betting and online casinos.
Suspicious high roller accounts
Finance Minister Dario Durigan explained that these specific accounts contain more than half a million reals each, with some holding over one million reals. Investigators plan to check the origins of these massive funds to see if they connect to money laundering or organized crime networks.
The vast majority of everyday bettors hold very little money in their profiles. Statistics show that just one percent of customers hold eighty percent of the outstanding balances waiting for repayment.
The refund process
The total amount of money awaiting repayment sits at over one billion reals from millions of customer accounts. Operators had a brief window to return funds directly to users through standard banking channels before websites went offline.
Industry groups are currently fighting the sudden prohibition in the Supreme Federal Court. A federal judge recently allowed one major operator to continue taking wagers temporarily because the government failed to provide enough time for a proper business shutdown.
Punters using Brazilian platforms face major disruption as authorities crack down on high value accounts and enforce a total market shutdown.
